The ZEN12 Motion Dimmer is a great addition to any smart home!

Style

If you're looking to have the ZEN12 Motion Dimmer match your wall plates, we would recommend getting Leviton white wall plates, commonly found in most hardware stores.

Load

The ZEN12 is rated for no more than 150W LED or 500W Incandescent lighting only (do NOT connect to motors, tube lights, receptacles, or fans). We also don't recommend mixing incandescent and LED bulbs in the same installation.

More information about what can or cannot be connected to Zooz switches can be found here in our Knowledge Base: General Questions about Zooz Light Switches.

Installation Options

How can I make sure I install the ZEN12 correctly? We would recommend starting with closely reading the instructions included with your ZEN12 and gathering the tools you'll need BEFORE you start the installation. The ZEN12 comes with pigtails for the ground, traveler, neutral, line and load connections ready to go. The ground, neutral, and line pigtails are prepped with Wago connectors for easy install, and the traveler and load wires are capped with wire nuts. If you decide you need more wire or wire nuts to finish your installation, then we would recommend 14 AWG, as used in most standard 120 V installations. Other basic electrical tools you should have on hand include a voltage meter and electrical pliers.

Check out these guidelines to ensure your ZEN12 installation is installed correctly:

  • Review the right wiring diagram. Make sure you're using the correct diagram found in the ZEN12 Manual when connecting the wiring for your Scene Controller.

  • Determine the wiring in your switch box. What's in your switch box might not line up with our diagrams so please feel free to send us images of the current wiring with the standard switches installed and we'll be happy to assist. Please review the requirements in this article prior to sending images.

  • Check for neutral. The ZEN12, like all Zooz switches, needs to be connected to neutral to be installed. Check with us if you're not sure if there's neutral in the box.

  • Bring in a licensed electrician. Hiring a licensed professional to install your switch is recommended, especially if you're not confident with electrical installations.

  • Ask us for help. Feel free to reach out to us if you need help with the wiring or want to see if the ZEN32 will work for your installation. Just submit a ticket with your order number so we can verify the model (Amazon order numbers work too!) and images of the wiring in each switch box of a fully working installation with standard mechanical switches installed so we can send the most accurate directions.

Standard Functionality

The motion dimmer will automatically turn on the light it controls when motion is detected. It will automatically turn the light off aer 30 seconds from the last detected motion event. Wait 1 minute aer power-up for the motion sensor to warm up before it starts detecting activity. If you’d like to change this behavior, you can adjust it in the advanced settings of the switch. There, you’ll be able to decide if, when, and how the built-in motion sensor triggers your dimmer. This includes the time of inactivity, the brightness level for “night mode”, as well as lux level offset and motion sensitivity.
