Recommended Accessories for Your ZSE18 Motion Sensor

The ZSE18 Motion Sensor can be powered via USB OR battery. Below are the recommendations for both power supplies.

Note: You can only use the ZSE18 sensor powered by either battery or USB. Please do not power the sensor with both methods at the same time, otherwise the device can be damaged. The battery in the ZSE18 cannot be charged by the USB - these are two separate power supply options.

Battery Powered

If you're powering the sensor via battery, you'll want a CR123A battery (3V).

If you've just replaced the battery in your sensor and find your unit is having issues, here are a few things you can try:

  1. Adjust the battery slot prongs to the middle to hole the battery tighter
    • Some brands, like Panasonic for example, make their CR123 A batteries just a fraction of an inch shorter. This can cause the battery to fall out of the slot once the mounting bracket is installed (due to the magnet pulling it out).
  2. Make sure you've included the sensor using the proper inclusion sequence (triple clicking the Z-Wave button)
    • Pressing and holding the Z-Wave button enrolls the sensor as an always listening node depleting batteries quickly
  3. If you're not sure how the sensor was added, try excluding it and pairing it again
    • Bring the sensor closer to the hub during the processes to eliminate any range issues, and run a Z-Wave repair (if your hub supports that function) once it's fully configured and installed in its target location

USB Powered

If you prefer to have your sensor be an 'always listening' device, then you'll want to power it via USB cable and 1 A USB power supply.

Here are the accessories for USB powered sensors:

Make sure to press and hold the Z-Wave button during inclusion in order for the sensor to be recognized as always listening.

Connectivity Issues? If you've just mounted the sensor or recently changed the battery but find the sensor is having trouble staying online, then it may be a range issue. The sensor has a Z-Wave range of up to 100 feet within line of sight. However, if it's located far away from the hub or if there are no other signal extending Z-Wave devices around, it can have trouble communicating with the hub. We recommend trying to add a Z-Wave signal repeater to your mesh network.

A signal repeater is any non-battery powered Z-Wave device installed in a location between the ZSE18 and hub. The hub can then use the repeaters to form a route to talk to the sensor. Repeaters can be something like a smart plug or switch (for example, the ZEN25 Double Plug or ZEN15 Power Switch) to help extend the Z-Wave signal in your home. You can also use a dedicated Z-Wave signal repeater, like this one here.

Repeaters are not necessary to have, but if you find your Motion Sensor is having staying connected to the hub, then it could help with any range or communication issues.

If your Motion Sensor is mounted near the hub or has plenty of signal repeaters near it, then you can try these other troubleshoots under your hub specific folder.
