A Guide to Using Scene Control with Zooz Devices on Alarm.com
print icon

Looking to take your smart home automations to the next level? With Zooz devices on Alarm.com, you can use scene control to trigger custom actions with just a tap, double-tap, or press-and-hold on your switches and remotes.

This functionality can be accessed using the specific Zooz models that come with scene control enabled by default, which means they can act as scene controllers in Alarm.com without any extra setup. This guide will walk you through:

  • Which Zooz devices support scene control on Alarm.com

  • What’s needed to get the feature working (including dealer settings)

  • Where to find step-by-step programming instructions for supported models

If you’re ready to make your smart home more responsive and convenient, let’s get started!

Basic Requirements

Before you start setting up scene control, there are a few important requirements to know about. Because Alarm.com handles Z-Wave devices a bit differently than other platforms, scene control will only work if certain conditions are met:

  • Dealer-enabled feature: Your Alarm.com dealer may need to enable scene control functionality for your account. If you don’t see scene trigger options when creating automations, reach out to your dealer to make sure it’s turned on.

  • Scene control must be enabled by default: Alarm.com does not provide access to advanced Z-Wave settings, so only devices that come with scene control already enabled can be used as scene controllers.

  • Proper pairing is required: Supported Zooz devices need to be added to your system as Z-Wave devices and show up correctly in your device list.

  • Scene events must appear in logs: Once everything is set up, button presses or multi-taps from your device should show up as scene events in the Alarm.com history/logs. This is a good way to confirm that the feature is working.

Meeting these requirements will ensure your scene-capable Zooz devices can reliably trigger automations in Alarm.com.

Supported Zooz Devices with Scene Control Enabled by Default

Not every Zooz device can be used as a scene controller on Alarm.com — only models that come with scene control enabled by default will work. These devices can send special scene commands (like double-taps or press-and-hold actions) that Alarm.com can use to trigger scenes.

Below, we’ve grouped all Zooz models that support this feature so you’ll know exactly which ones can act as scene controllers in your system.

Fully Integrated Devices

The three models below have been integrated officially by Alarm.com and can be used to program scene activation. While you are not able to directly trigger another device with any models at this time or access the advanced settings, you can trigger any scene with the buttons.

If you do not see the Remote option or the scene option when programming, you will need to reach out to your individual security panel provider so they can push the update and allow the integration. Alarm.com integrated the device in November of 2024, but the final update might not be pushed by the individual Alarm.com dealers/partners.

Other Devices That Can Be Used as Scene Controllers

The devices listed below have scene control enabled by default; as such they can be used to trigger scenes in Alarm.com. While we don't have programming articles specific to these devices, you can utilize the instructions linked above for the ZEN32, ZEN34, or ZEN37, as the process will be the same.

  • ZEN35 Scene Dimmer

    • Scene events available by default

    • 5 button scene controller, with dimming available for the load from the main button

    • Refer to programming instructions for the ZEN32 linked above

  • ZEN57 XS Relay

    • On/off Z-Wave control for 100-240VAC 50/60 Hz lights up to 5A

    • Scene control available only when used with a momentary wall switch, like the ZAC99 Momentary Switch

  • ZEN58 Low Voltage Relay

    • Dry Contact On/off Z-Wave control for 0-240V loads up to 3A

    • Low Voltage power: this relay runs on a 9-40V power supply

    • Scene control available only when used with a momentary switch, like the ZAC99 Momentary Switch

Scene Control Disabled by Default

All of our main wall switch models work perfectly on Alarm.com for standard on/off or dimming control, but it’s important to note that they cannot be used to trigger scenes.

These models have scene control disabled by default to ensure quicker paddle response times. Because Alarm.com does not allow changing advanced Z-Wave settings, there’s no way to enable scene control on them after installation.

If you only need basic lighting control, these switches are a great fit — but if you want to trigger automations from the switch itself (like double-tapping to run a scene), you’ll want to use one of the supported scene control devices listed earlier.

  • ZEN71 On/Off Paddle Switch

  • ZEN72 Paddle Dimmer

  • ZEN73 On/Off Toggle Switch

  • ZEN74 Toggle Dimmer

  • ZEN75 Heavy Duty Switch

  • ZEN76 On/Off Paddle Switch

  • ZEN77 Paddle Dimmer

How to Program Scenes on Alarm.com

Once your Zooz scene control device is added to your system, you can program its buttons or tap patterns to trigger scenes in Alarm.com.

Important: You must first create the scene you want to trigger before programming the Zooz device to trigger the scene. Scene control on Alarm.com can only run scenes — not individual devices directly.

Follow these steps:

Create the desired scene

  • In your Alarm.com app or web portal, go to Automation > Scenes and create the scene you want your device to trigger.

  • Make sure the scene works as expected when run manually.

Open the Zooz device settings

  • From the Home page, choose More.

  • Click Manage Devices.

  • In the Remotes section, click the 3 dots next to your Zooz scene control device.

  • Choose Device Settings.

Assign the scene to a button

  • On the device settings page, scroll to the Automation section.

  • Click Configure under the button you want to use.

  • You are now in the Rules Builder screen.

  • Once saved, pressing that button on your Zooz device will trigger the scene you assigned. You can repeat the same process for each button you want to program.

💡 Tip: If you don’t see the “Configure” or “Automation” options, contact your Alarm.com dealer to confirm that the scene control feature is enabled for your account.

Link the button to your scene

  • In Rules Builder, click Select under the Then section.

  • Choose Scene (note: this is the only option; you cannot control individual devices directly here).

  • Select the scene you created earlier and click Done to assign it to a single-click action.

Add multi-tap actions (optional)

  • Click the pen icon next to the action to edit it.

  • Select from the available multi-tap options if you’d like the button to trigger different scenes with double-taps or other tap patterns.

  • If you only want a single-click action, skip this step.

Save your new rule

  • Click Save, give your new rule a name, and click OK to exit the wizard.

Troubleshooting Tips

Before you start using scene control with your Zooz devices on Alarm.com, keep these important notes in mind:

  • Dealer Access May Be Required
Some Alarm.com accounts may not show the “Configure” or “Automation” options by default. If you don’t see these options in your device settings, reach out to your Alarm.com dealer and ask them to enable scene control (also called remote button rules) for your account.

  • Scenes Must Be Created First
Scene control devices can only trigger existing scenes — they cannot control individual devices directly. Always create the scene you want to use before attempting to program your Zooz device.

  • Momentary Switch Requirement for Certain Models
ZEN57 XS Relay and ZEN58 Low Voltage Relay can only be used as scene controllers when connected to a momentary (push button) switch.

  • Multi-Tap Support Varies by Device
Many Zooz scene control devices support multiple tap patterns (single, double, triple taps, etc.) for triggering different scenes from the same button. Check your specific model’s documentation to see which tap patterns are supported.

  • Standard Functionality Still Available
Even if a device isn’t used for scene control, it will still work as a regular switch or dimmer on Alarm.com for turning lights on/off or adjusting brightness.

Summary

Using scene control with Zooz devices on Alarm.com is a powerful way to make your smart home even more convenient and automated. With the right devices and a little setup, you can trigger complex automations from a single tap of a button or switch.

Just remember these key points as you get started:

  • Scene control can only trigger scenes, not individual devices.

  • Once it’s set up, your scene control devices will give you quick, customizable access to your favorite automations — all without opening the app.

  • You may need your Alarm.com dealer to enable this feature if you don’t see the programming options in your account.
