How to Program Your ZEN37 Wall Remote on SmartThings

Once you've added the device to your hub and ensured you are running the Edge driver, it's time to program it. The Edge driver is required to program the ZEN37 Wall Remote on SmartThings.

The Zooz ZEN37 is a powerful Z-Wave scene controller featuring four customizable physical buttons. Each button can be individually programmed to trigger automations through Central Scene commands or to directly control other Z-Wave devices using Direct Association. This dual-mode capability allows users to choose between flexible, hub-based automation logic or basic device-to-device control. Whether you're aiming to activate complex Home Assistant scenes or simply control a nearby light switch, programming the ZEN37 offers a smart and adaptable solution for seamless home automation.

First, make sure your device was recognized correctly as the Zooz ZEN37 Wall Remote and displays with a remote control icon in the app. If it was added as a Z-Wave device and doesn't look like it has any capability or settings in the app, please exclude it and try adding it again.

Scene Control / Central Scene Programming

You can control devices and activate scenes using this remote by assigning custom actions to selected button triggers. Just click on the device in your SmartThings app and take a look at the list of available actions, then click on the ones that you'd like to use as triggers. Here is how the buttons on the device are organized:

You can program scene control on the device either through the Controls screen or through Routines, and we've included screenshots for both options below:

Programming From the Controls Screen

1. From the Home screen in the app, select the ZEN37.

2. This brings up the Controls screen. Each button will display with the available programming actions (see the image above for the button mapping). In this example, we will program the single press. Click Pressed

3. Click + Add what this routine will do.

4. Select what the routine will accomplish. In this example, we are controlling another device.

5. Select the device you will control. In this example, we are controlling the ZEN15 Power Switch. Click Next.

6. Select what the device will do. Click Done.

7. Add any additional actions and test the routine. When you're satisfied, click Save.

8. Here you can edit the icon for the scene and add it to a category if you wish. Click Save when done.

9. Your new scene will display in the Controls screen.

Programming From the Routines Screen

1. From the Home screen in the app, select the ZEN37.

2. Select Routines from the bottom menu.

3. This will show you any Routines currently including the device. Click +Add Routine.

4. Click on the ZEN37: Choose conditions that will start this routine

5. Select the button and the option. In this example, we have selected Button 1: Pressed 2 times.

6. Click +Add what this routine will do.

7. Add any additional actions and test the routine. When you're satisfied, click Save.

8. Here you can edit the icon for the scene and add it to a category if you wish. Click Save when done.

9. Your new scene will display in the Controls screen.

If you need to edit or delete any of the programming, just go to the SmartThings app menu and click on Routines. Then find the action you'd like to remove on the list of your Routines and press and hold it to delete.

Direct Association Programming

With the Edge driver installed, you can also control other Z-Wave devices with this Wall Remote through direct association. This will establish a link between the devices that will allow them to communicate even if the hub is down.

Direct association is a direct link established between two Z-Wave devices where one of them acts as the trigger and the other acts as the receiver of that trigger. For example, if you associate a Z-Wave light switch to a motion sensor, the light switch will turn on anytime motion is triggered, without the hub getting involved or without the need to set up an automation for it. In other words, one Z-Wave device sends a direct message to another Z-Wave device, bypassing the hub. These are usually very simple unconditional commands like "on/off" or "dim/increase brightness". The communication works one way without any feedback to the other device. The controlling device simply sends the command to the controlled device or devices associated in what we call "association group". The controlling device is not affected by the controlled device at all, even though there is a link established between the two, it only ever works in one direction. You'll want to ensure all associated devices are included to the hub with the same level of security before proceeding. Please take note of any Direct Association Programming limitations and recommendations here

Association Groups

The association groups supported by the ZEN37 can be found in the device manual, in the Advanced Settings document, and we've included them below as well:

Group 2: Buttons 1 & 2: Button 1 Basic set On; Button 2 Basic Set Off

Group 3: Buttons 3 & 4: Button 3 Basic Set On; Button 4 Basic Set Off

Group 4: Buttons 1 & 2: Multilevel start level change (held) and stop level change (released) for buttons 1 and 2 (used for remote dimming)

Group 5: Buttons 3 & 4: Multilevel start level change (held) and stop level change (released) for buttons 3 and 4 (used for remote dimming)

Group 6: Button 1: Basic to toggle device on and off in sequence when button 1 is pressed

Group 7: Button 2: Basic to toggle device on and off in sequence when button 2 is pressed

Group 8: Button 3: Basic to toggle device on and off in sequence when button 3 is pressed

Group 9: Button 4: Basic to toggle device on and off in sequence when button 4 is pressed

Programming Direct Association

1. Click on the device you want to control from the ZEN37. In this example, we will be associating the ZEN15.

2. Take note of the controlled device's Network ID from the Controls Screen. In this instance, the Device Network ID for the ZEN15 is 18.

3. Go back to the home screen and select the ZEN37 Wall Remote, then click the 3 dots in the upper right hand corner.

4. Click Settings.

5. Scroll down to the bottom of the settings section and choose the association group for the button/s you want to use and the functionality (on/off or dimming control). In this example we are using Group 2 for basic on/off control from Buttons 1 and 2 respectively.

6. Enter the Device ID for the controlled device that you saved in step 2. Click Save.

7. IMPORTANT: Wake the ZEN37 up by clicking the lower left button 6 times as quickly as possible to wake the device up to receive the update to the programming. The LED indicator will stay on solid blue during wake-up and will turn off when the device turns the Z-Wave radio off again.

8. You'll now see the Device ID shown under the Group Association in Settings.
