How to Connect Your Power Switch to SmartThings

Be sure to include your Power Switch to the network BEFORE connecting it to any device or appliance.

Take a look at your app and check if you're using the SmartThings Classic app or the newest SmartThings app. SmartThings is in the process of updating their platform and transitioning from Classic to the newer app. While the new app is still a work in progress, you'll be able to control the Power Switch remotely once you have the custom device handler added. However, at the time of writing (March 2019), the handler will not give you access to the Power Switch's advanced settings on the new app. This is because the new app simply doesn't give the option to customize your devices yet.

If you're using Classic, the Power Switch will work with SmartThings out of the box, and you'll just need to add the handler to access the advanced settings.

Once the handler is installed and shows up in your IDE portal, you can include the Power Switch to your network. Here's how:

If you're using the Classic app:

  1. Plug the Power Switch into an outlet within direct range of SmartThings
  2. Press and release the Z-Wave button while making sure the LED indicator is on.
  3. Add the Power Switch to SmartThings by clicking "Add thing" on your app and pressing the Z-Wave button 3 times very quickly
  4. The LED indicator will start flashing blue, then turn blue (on) or pink (off) once included
  5. A new on / off device will appear on your device list

If you're using the newer app:

  1. From the home screen, tap the "+" (plus) icon and tap Add device
  2. Tap Auto Detect
  3. Press the Z-Wave button 3 times very quickly
  4. The app will indicate when the device connects
  5. Tap Edit to rename the device, and tap Done to save the name
  6. Tap Done to complete the setup

Once you include the Power Switch and move it to its final location, it never hurts to perform network repair to optimize connectivity. This will help SmartThings find the best communication route to the Power Switch. Here's how to repair the network
