ZSE11 sensor having trouble pairing with Home Assistant? Try exclusion!

Exclusion acts as a soft Z-Wave reset that can be done even if a device hasn't been included to your Z-Wave network before.

It may sound strange, but exclusion is just a reset. A device doesn't need to be included to be able to be excluded.

Here's how to do it:

  1. In Home Assistant: open Settings Devices and Services Z-Wave JS > Configure
  2. Click on Remove Device
  3. Click on Start Exclusion
  4. Click the Z-Wave button 3 times as quickly as possible (the LED indicator will start flashing).
  5. Home Assistant will confirm that the device was removed and you should now be able to add it to your system.

If exclusion is not successful:

Try a factory reset on the device.

  1. First, make sure the sensor is powered.
  2. Press and hold the Z-Wave button for at least 20 seconds.
  3. The LED indicator will start flashing and turn solid on for a couple of seconds to indicate a successful reset.
  4. You should now be able to add it to your system.

If that didn't work, here are some troubleshoots we find helpful:

  • Give the exclusion steps another try in case the command wasn't registered on the first try. Additionally, try pressing the Z-Wave button 4-5 times if it's not working in 3 presses.
  • Bring the sensor closer to the hub and try to exclude and re-include it. If you're able to add the device, then the previous location may have been out of range or there may have been too many interferences nearby.
  • You can also try adding a Z-Wave signal repeater (or any non-battery powered Z-Wave device) between the sensor and hub. It will improve the strength of your Z-Wave network and help the hub reach the sensor. A Z-stick or hand-held secondary controller can then be used to add the sensor to the network.
  • If you're able to include to sensor but it's not responding to Z-Wave commands or shows as offline, check out these tips for troubleshooting connectivity.
