How to Calibrate the ZSE43 Tilt | Shock Sensor
print icon

The ZSE43 Tilt | Shock Sensor has been fully redesigned for Hardware Version 3.0 with a triaxial accelerometer that provides more precise tilt detection than the mechanical tilt sensor used in the previous version. This new sensor design also introduces a calibration process that allows the ZSE43 to establish its installed position as the baseline for tilt detection.

Because the accelerometer uses gravity to determine the sensor’s orientation, proper calibration depends on the sensor being in its actual installation position. The calibration process should therefore be performed only after the ZSE43 has been installed and positioned exactly as it will be during normal operation.

Always calibrate and test the sensor when installed in the actual detection location. Never test or calibrate the ZSE43 while holding it in your hand or simply sitting on a desk or other flat test surface.

A handheld test does not accurately represent the sensor's installed position and will not provide a reliable indication of its tilt detection or reporting ability. The same applies to calibrating the sensor in a temporary test environment rather than at its actual installation location. If you have any issues with tilt reporting, factory reset the unit and calibrate it while it is installed in the detection location.

Once the sensor is properly installed, calibration can be performed in either of the following ways:

  • Using Parameter 16: Advanced Calibration

  • Directly from the sensor using the Z-Wave button

Option 1: Advanced Calibration Using Parameter 16

You can calibrate the sensor by changing the value in parameter 16. All of the ZSE43 Advanced Settings are linked here, and you can find a guide to accessing the settings for your hub in our Knowledge Base.

  1. Set Parameter 16 to a value of 1.

  2. Wake the sensor by pressing the Z-Wave button 4 times.

  3. Immediately press the Z-Wave button twice (double-click).

  4. The sensor will enter calibration mode: The LED initially flashes red and blue to indicate that the sensor is entering calibration. It then flashes red and green, which indicates it is calibrating. Finally, the LED flashes green 4 times to indicate successful calibration.

  5. Once calibration is successful, Parameter 16 will automatically return to its default value of 0.

Option 2: Calibration From the Device

Calibration can also be initiated directly from the sensor as well without accessing the settings.

Before starting, make sure the sensor is securely mounted in its final installation location and is positioned exactly as it will be during normal operation.

  1. Press and hold the Action button for approximately 5 seconds.

  2. The LED will begin flashing rapidly, alternating between red and blue.

  3. Make sure the sensor is mounted in the appropriate position and leave it completely still.

  4. The sensor will enter calibration mode: The LED initially flashes red and blue to indicate that the sensor is entering calibration. It then flashes red and green, which indicates it is calibrating. Finally, the LED flashes green 4 times to indicate successful calibration.

Keep the sensor completely still during calibration. If the sensor detects tilting or vibration before calibration is complete, it will automatically return to the alternating red-and-blue flashing pattern and resample the data until a stable position is detected.

Why Proper Installation Matters

The ZSE43's accelerometer uses gravity to determine the sensor's orientation. Calibration therefore establishes the sensor's actual installed position as its baseline.

This means calibration should NEVER be performed:

  • While holding the sensor in your hand

  • On a desk or other temporary surface

  • In a test environment that differs from the final installation location

  • While the sensor is being moved, tilted, or vibrated

Once calibration is complete, the ZSE43 will use the position captured during calibration as its baseline for tilt detection. If the sensor is moved or repositioned after calibration, it should be recalibrated from its new installed position.
