How to Use the ZEN16 MultiRelay as a Universal Remote Control
print icon

You can automate your standard garage door keypad or a Liftmaster remote control to trigger Z-Wave events with the ZEN16 MultiRelay. Switch loads connected directly to the ZEN16 with your wireless inputs or use the signal to trigger other connected devices in your network with a click from your hand-held remote.

1. WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

2. WIRING:

Below we're showing a diagram for how to add your ZEN16 MultiRelay between the Liftmaster receiver and the load it's controlling now. This will allow you to use any of your existing remote controls to control the connected loads but it will also allow you to control these loads via Z-Wave using the ZEN16 MultiRelay. You can also use the ZEN16 here as a signal transmitter only without having anything  physically connected to the relay (output) terminals and just use the Z-Wave events to trigger other devices or scenes programmed in your smart home network via Z-Wave. Simply ignore the connections to the relays and wire the ZEN16 for inputs (Switch terminals) only.

If you're not sure how to read the diagram or complete the installation, please get in touch with us to confirm if your set-up is compatible with the ZEN16 device.

  • WIRING TIPS: Always take "before" pictures just in case you need to restore the original set-up or send us images for consultation. Use the correct screwdriver size for the terminal screws on your MultiRelay and wall switches (if connecting them). Use appropriate electrical tools when cutting, prepping, and stripping electrical wires. If you don’t have the necessary tools to perform the installation or if you're not sure how to operate the electrical tools, please hire an electrician to complete the installation for you. Follow the National Electrical Code and your local safety regulations when performing the installation, including (but not limited to), choosing the correct gauge of jumper wires. The recommended gauge for 15 Amp circuits is 14 AWG and 12 AWG for 20 Amp circuits.
  • POWER OFF: turn the circuit power off in the breaker panel before you start. Keep the MultiRelay unplugged from its power source.
  • DISCONNECT THE LOAD: Take the load connections from the receiver and install them in the R1/R2/R3 terminals of the ZEN16.
  • CONNECT THE RECEIVER: Connect the Sw terminals on the MultiRelay to the Liftmaster receiver as shown in the diagram below. Please note that no Voltage can be applied to the switch terminals on the ZEN16 at any time.

  • TEST THE SET-UP: Restore power to the ZEN16 MultiRelay and test the installation by triggering your remote controls to control the loads which are now connected to the ZEN16 MultiRelay. If they're not working, please double check that all connections are firm and that the ZEN16 is powered. Please remember to turn the power off at the breaker when handling the wires.

3. PROGRAMMING:

Include the MultiRelay to your Z-Wave hub and make sure you see 4 new devices display: 1 master device to control all 3 relays at the same time and 3 child devices for individual control of each relay. You will now be able to capture the on/off events from the remote controls in your Z-Wave hub as well as control the connected loads directly from your Z-Wave hub or with voice commands if your have a smart speaker integrated into your set-up.
