Having trouble with your switch or dimmer? This guide outlines what to check first and what information to gather so our team can assist you efficiently and help prevent repeat issues.
All of our devices go through a thorough quality control process before leaving our facility, including electrical testing and Z-Wave verification. That said, installations in the field can vary quite a bit. Even well planned installs can run into issues due to load compatibility, wiring differences between homes, or small installation details that are easy to miss.
Our goal is to work together with you to understand what’s happening and get to the right solution. If we ask questions or request details, it’s not to delay service or question your setup. It’s simply to make sure we’re solving the actual problem and helping you avoid the same issue with a replacement.
Installation Tips & Best Practices
Before diving into troubleshooting or submitting a claim, here are some key things to keep in mind:
-
Power Off: Always turn off power at the breaker before working with any wiring. This is critical for safety. Never rely on just turning the switch off.
-
Identification: Identify all wires with certainty before connecting the device. If you’re unsure, stop and verify before proceeding. Wire colors are not always reliable. Use a voltage tester or consult an electrician if needed.
-
Diagram: Use the correct wiring diagram for your specific model and setup. Different models and configurations have different requirements. Using the wrong diagram is one of the most common causes of issues.
-
Load Compatibility: Double check load compatibility. LED bulbs in particular can vary widely. Even if they are labeled dimmable, not all perform well with every dimmer. Total wattage and bulb driver quality both matter.
-
Screw Terminals: Be careful when working with terminals and screws. NEVER use power tools, as overtightening or over-loosening can damage the terminals; handheld screwdrivers only.
-
Isolation: Make sure all wires are fully secured and that no bare wire is exposed outside the terminals. Use the included terminal covers where applicable, as exposed terminals may create unsafe conditions and can void warranty coverage.
-
Secondary Switches: Only use standard mechanical switches in multi way setups. When installing in 3 way or 4 way configurations, the other switch must be a regular mechanical switch. Do not use another dimmer or a switch with LED indicators.
-
Placement: Power stays OFF! Carefully place the device back into the box. Make sure wires are neatly arranged and not pinched or strained when pushing the switch back in.
-
Plate Screws: Power stays OFF! Use the included short screws for the wall plate. Longer screws can damage internal components, especially on toggle style switches.
Only once the switch is seated back in the box and the plate and plate screws are secured should power be restored to the installation. Never place the switch into the box or install the plate screws with the power on to the switch.

Troubleshooting Steps Before Reaching Out
These quick steps resolve many common issues and are worth trying before starting a warranty claim. Sometimes the issue is simple and related to configuration, power state, or a temporary condition that can be resolved without replacing the device.
Please try the following:
-
Exclude and re include the device in your Z-Wave network
-
Power cycle the circuit at the breaker
-
Perform a factory reset on the device
-
Power cycle the device using the air gap switch. For paddle dimmers, when the air gap is pulled out, power is disconnected. When the air gap is pushed in, power is restored. For toggle dimmers, when the air gap is flipped to the right, power is disconnected. When flipped to the left, power is restored.
Load and Installation Details
Smart switches and dimmers interact directly with the electrical load and wiring configuration in your home. Performance can vary depending on the type of bulbs, total load, and whether the installation is single pole or multi way. These details help us confirm compatibility and identify any conditions that may affect operation. You can read more about supported and recommended load types here: What Lighting Fixtures And Electrical Loads Can I Control With Zooz Switches?, as well as more information about LED bulbs here: Which LED Bulbs Can I Use with My Zooz Switches and Dimmers?
Please provide all of the following when submitting your warranty claim:
-
Type of load connected to the device: for example LED bulbs, incandescent bulbs, fans, or other fixtures
-
Brand and model of the bulbs or load
-
Wattage of each bulb and total number of bulbs on the circuit
-
Installation type: single pole, 3 way, 4 way, etc.
-
Confirmation of whether the device is controlling only lighting or a mixed load (fan and light, LED and incandescent, motor, etc.)
Gather Information
If the issue persists, the next step is to gather a few details about your setup so we can properly evaluate the situation. These details help us ensure we provide the correct unit as a replacement, and also do our best to ensure you don't experience the inconvenience of another failure due to a preventable cause.
1. Load Details
Smart switches and dimmers are highly dependent on the connected load and wiring configuration. These details help us confirm compatibility and identify anything that may be affecting performance.
Please include all of the following details for expedited troubleshooting and warranty:
-
Type of load connected: for example LED bulbs, incandescent, fans, or other fixtures
-
Brand and model of the bulbs or load
-
Wattage of each bulb and total number of bulbs on the circuit
-
Installation type: single pole, 3 way, 4 way, etc.
-
Confirmation of whether the device is controlling only lighting or a mixed load
Wiring Images
Wiring plays a major role in how the device performs. Smart switches have more specific requirements than standard switches, and even experienced installers can run into issues if those differences are not fully accounted for. Reviewing images allows us to verify the setup and catch anything that may not be obvious otherwise. Including wiring images with your initial request can significantly speed up the process. Please follow these guidelines when providing images:
-
Provide images from each switch box involved in the setup: single pole equals 1 box, 3 way equals 2 boxes, 4 way equals 3 boxes and so on
-
Label each image clearly: for example box A, box B
-
Unscrew and gently pull all switches forward to show the wiring behind them: include other switches in the same box so we can see where all wiring leads
-
Identify the switch being troubleshooted in each box
-
For multi way setups, point to the common terminal on the 3 way switch
-
Make sure the box is well lit and all wires are clearly visible
-
Ensure each wire can be traced from the switch terminal to the back of the box
-
Uncover wire bundles so all connections are visible
-
Include all wires from the cables involved, even if they are not connected directly to the switch
