How to Add Your ZEN53 DC Motor Controller to Home Assistant

Got your ZEN53 installed correctly and powered with an appropriate 6-32 VDC power supply? Let's include the device! Inclusion is quick and easy; simply follow the steps below to have your device added to your Home Assistant.

We recommend using the new JS Z-Wave integration for optimal results.

Here are the instructions for joining the ZEN53 DC Motor Controller to Home Assistant:

  1. Ensure the unit is installed and powered by the correct 6-32 VDC power supply
  2. In Home Assistant: click on Add a Z-Wave Device
  3. When Home Assistant displays the following message: "Your Z-Wave controller is now in inclusion mode. Follow the directions that came with your device to trigger pairing on the device," click the Z-Wave button 3 times as quickly as possible (the LED indicator will start flashing)
  4. If asked to enter the SmartStart security PIN, enter the PIN located on the back of the device, next to the Z-Wave Plus logo
  5. The LED indicator will blink green to signal communication, and turn green for 2 seconds if inclusion is successful
  6. Home Assistant will confirm that the relay was added, and it will be immediately visible in your device list

If Home Assistant is having trouble recognizing the device: try removing or excluding the relay first. This is the recommended procedure to assist with any configuration and inclusion issues, as it also acts as a soft Z-Wave reset for the device. This can be done even if the ZEN53 has never been included before. To exclude:

  1. In Home Assistant: open Configuration > Integrations > Z-Wave JS > Configure
  2. Click on Remove Node
  3. Click on Start Exclusion
  4. Click the Z-Wave button 3 times as quickly as possible (the LED indicator will start flashing)
  5. Home Assistant will confirm that the device was removed and you should now be able to add it to your system
