How to Set Up Custom Audio Notifications for Your MultiSiren in SmartThings

As a SmartThings user, yours is one of the only Z-Wave hubs that gives you the ability to assign built-in audio messages to your Multisiren and use them in rules and automations.

This is because currently many hubs don't support the Sound Switch command class, which is required to enable this functionality. Examples of audio notifications and rules that you can enable:

  • Trigger a motion detection announcement when a motion sensor reports presence unexpectedly
  • Play a doorbell sound when the contact sensor on the front door is activated
  • Upload a custom message or sound to use in any scenario you wish!

You'll just need to install the custom device handler for the unit and follow the steps below to start taking advantage of your Multisiren's audio speaker. Note that the process looks different if you're using the Classic app or the newer SmartThings app, so take note of which app you're using before beginning the set up. Regardless of the app, you will need to install the custom device handler all the same. Here's how to create a rule using the audio speaker functionality:

In the SmartThings Classic app:

  1. Tap Automation at the bottom of your home page
  2. Tap +Add a SmartApp
  3. Tap Safety & Security
  4. Tap Smart Home Monitor
  5. Tap Custom
  6. Tap New Monitoring Rule
  7. Choose the type of sensor that you'd like to assign with an audio notification > Done
  8. Tap Select Sensors > choose the device > select Done
  9. On the same page, adjust frequency to desired values
  10. Tap Next
  11. Tap Audio Notifications
  12. Tap Select Audio Player > select Multisiren > select Done
  13. Tap Notification > choose Custom Message
  14. Input the sound number you want to play under Play this message (see sound numbers below) > tap Save
  15. Tap Next > rename the rule > select Save

In the new SmartThings app:

  1. Tap Automations in the bottom righthand corner
  2. Tap the + symbol in the upper lefthand corner
  3. Choose Speaker Companion from the list
  4. Choose Play a Notification
  5. Choose Custom Message > select Done
  6. Input the sound number you want to play under Play this message (see sound numbers below) > tap Done
  7. Tap On this Speaker Player > select Multisiren > select Done
  8. Under When, choose the type of event you want to assign the notification to. For example, select Motion Here and then the motion sensor you want to automate. Select Done
  9. Review the additional options to see if you'd like to customize the rule further. Rename the rule if you'd like.
  10. Select Done
