How to Connect Your ZEN21 On/Off Switch to SmartThings

Before adding your switch to SmartThings, make sure it works fine when controlled manually.

Now it's time to add the switch to SmartThings. As of October 2018, SmartThings is in the process of transitioning between the SmartThings Classic app and the newer SmartThings app. Confusingly, the switch will work with the Classic app out of the box (you'll just need to add the custom device handler to enable advanced features), but you'll need the handler straight away for the switch to work with the new app. At the time of writing, you also won't have access to any advanced settings on the new app, even with the handler installed. This is why we highly recommend going with SmartThings Classic until SmartThings lets all users know they should migrate to the new app.

Here's how to add your switch to SmartThings using the SmartThings Classic app:

1. Tap "Add thing" in your Classic app
2. On the switch, tap the UPPER paddle 3 times quickly
3. A new on / off device will appear on your device list

Once the switch is included, it never hurts to perform network repair to optimize connectivity. This will help SmartThings find the best communication route to the switch. Here's how to repair the network

If you'd like to add the switch using the newer SmartThings app, first add the custom device handler, and follow the steps below:

  1. From the Dashboard, tap Add device
  2. Android: Tap Add Device Manually
  3. Select the Switch/Dimmer category and then any Z-Wave on/off switch, regardless of brand. With the device handler installed, the switch will be recognized correctly.
  4. If you have more than one SmartThings Hub connected, select the Hub you'd like to connect the device to
  5. Tap the UPPER paddle 3 times quickly
  6. The app will indicate when the device connects
  7. Tap Edit to rename the device, and tap Done to save the name
  8. Tap Done to complete the setup

If you're having issues including your device to SmartThings, we'd recommend excluding it using the instructions here and then re-including once more.

If you have any questions about the process or you're running into issues, please reach out to us! We're always happy to help.
