How to Add Your Double Plug to SmartThings

SmartThings currently offers two different apps, and the inclusion process is different for each:

As of December 2019, SmartThings is in the process of transitioning between the SmartThings Classic app and the newer SmartThings app. You'll need to install a custom device handler for the Double Plug regardless which app you're using. However, you'll only be able to customize the Double Plug using the Classic app once the handler is installed. The new SmartThings app currently doesn't give access to any device's advanced settings. You'll still have basic functionality though!

If you haven't added a custom handler before, don't worry! The handler is a piece of code that enables the Double Plug's advanced settings and makes sure the device is configured properly. The process takes less than 5 minutes. Here's how to do it.

Once the handler is installed and shows up in your IDE portal, you can include the Double Plug to your network automatically or manually. Here's how to do it with the Classic app:

Auto-inclusion using the Classic app:

  1. Put SmartThings into inclusion mode by clicking "Add Thing" in your app.
  2. Plug the Double Plug into a grounded 120VAC receptacle you’re planning to use it at (it doesn’t need to be close to the hub). The LED indicators should start flashing
  3. Four new on/off devices will appear on your device list. See note below.

Manual inclusion using the Classic app:

  1. Plug the Double Plug into a grounded 120VAC receptacle you’re planning to use it at (it doesn’t need to be close to the hub).
  2. Put SmartThings into inclusion mode by clicking "Add Thing" in your app.
  3. On your Double Plug, click the Z-Wave 3 times quickly - all of the LED indicators should start flashing.
  4. Four new on/off devices will appear on your device list. See note below.

Here's how to include the Double Plug using the new app (once the handler is installed):

  1. From the home screen, tap the "+" (plus) icon and tap Add device
  2. Tap Scan
  3. On the Double Plug, press the Z-Wave button 3 times quickly
  4. The app will indicate when the device connects
  5. Tap Edit to rename the device, and tap Done to save the name
  6. Tap Done to complete the setup

NOTE: Whether you include the device automatically or manually on either the Classic or new app, you’ll see 3 new on/off devices appear:

  • 2 channels for on/off control
  • 1 master node to control both outlets at the same time and to access and adjust advanced settings in (if your hub supports parameter input). You'll be able to check USB port status under the master node (the USB port reporting charging / charged status where "on" means charging and "off" means charged)

If you're having issues including your Double Plug to SmartThings, we'd recommend excluding the device using the instructions here
